Verizon Literacy University adds
three courses
Did you know that in 2002, more than 1 mil. people immigrated
to the U.S.A., and over 500,000 others became citizens? Verizon
Literacy University has added three new courses to assist volunteers
working in literacy programs providing services to these new
immigrants.
• Volunteering in English Language Learner Literacy Classes
introduces several English Language Learners and describes the
special roles volunteers play in meeting the needs of these
learners.
• Culture and English Language Learners examines the
different dimensions of culture and how cultural values influence
learning.
• Citizenship: What Volunteers Need to Know provides
information on what literacy students in citizenship programs are
likely to encounter during the citizenship process.
VLU is available at no charge to anyone. Most of the courses
can be completed in 30-45 minutes and cover a variety of
literacy-related topics. Visit
www.vluonline.org. |

Nova Five's
Raisy clowns around with reading
On Jan. 22, Linda Rubin, dressed as
Raisy the Clown, and several members of the Brooklyn Council tricked
50 kindergarteners and 10 special ed students at the P.S. 260
Library into reading. Raisy unzipped the bottom of a cloth bag and
put her hand through to prove the bag was empty. She zipped the bag,
put her hand in, and came out with six cards. Each card had a word
on it. They were: Out, And, About, With, Anthony, Ant. The children
read each card. The cards were put back in the zippered bag. Raisy
and the children said the magic words, "Verizon Reads with the
Pioneers." Raisy then pulled the book, "Out and about with Anthony
Ant," from the bag. The children loved the trick! After reading,
Raisy gave a book to each child. |

Janet Pearson, Our Pioneer Angel
by: Cal Frost, Immediate
Past VP - Verizon TelecomPioneers
"Three years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to serve
the Verizon TelecomPioneers as vice president. When one attempts to
embrace the scope of such an assignment, it doesn't take very long
to realize that you are not going to get the job done alone. You
need to find the very best and most dedicated help available. For
me, that help was on my side, always there, an angel in every way...
my Pioneer angel, Janet Pearson.
As president of one of the most successful Pioneer chapters in
the United States, she was a bellwether for both leadership and
dedication. As national coordinator for Verizon TelecomPioneer's
Verizon Reads and Seasons Readings Literacy Programs, she was the
rock upon which our volunteer efforts have been based for the past
three years. No project was too large for Janet's hand, no effort or
commitment too great for her spirit.
May we all continue to live the Spirit of Pioneering with the
same zeal that Janet Pearson lived it for so many decades. Janet, I
hope you will continue to look over me in the same way you have
these most recent three years. Life wouldn't be the same without my
Pioneer Angel."
Janet Pearson passed away Feb. 12 from complications relating
to diabetes. Donations in her name may be sent to St. Georges
Catholic Church, 22 Cook Ave., Glenolden, Pa. 19036. |
