Pioneers assembling backpacks
On August 23, the Paumanok Chapter, together with the Helping Hand Rescue Mission, distributed 302 age/gender appropriate backpacks to children ages four to 17 in the Huntington Station community through the Happy Day Express annual back-to-school project. This year, a $5,000 Verizon grant helped ensure these children would begin school with all the tools needed for learning.
Service Nation Logo
The ServiceNation Summit was held in New York City Sept. 11-12, Both presidential candidates via satellite pledged their support of Federal-subsidized service programs such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. But the real agenda of the event lies in a 60-page document released at the same time. "Strategies for Becoming a Nation of Service," represents the blueprint of a vision, endorsed by ServiceNation coalition members, to "unleash the energy of citizens on our most pressing social challenges by strengthening and increasing community and national service opportunities."

Download the full document (or a three-page Executive Summary) to see the proposals for "meaningful opportunities for service at every key life stage, and for every socioeconomic group, from kindergarten through the post-retirement years." Among the highlights of Strategies for Becoming a Nation of Service are ideas for:
  • Engaging 100 million Americans in community service.
  • Engaging 20 million youth per year in school and community-based service learning.
  • Expanding service on college campuses.
  • Placing 1 million Americans per year in full- and part-time stipended national service by 2020.
  • Launching a Veterans Service Fellowship.
  • Fostering new innovations and growth to scale in the nonprofit sector.
  • Providing millions of Americans age 50 and older opportunities to use their lifetime of learning and skills to help address America's challenges.

International Volunteer Managers Day Logo
Volunteering does not succeed without effective management and support. Behind the Pioneer army of volunteers lies an equally dedicated group of individuals who are responsible for the coordination, support, training, administration and recruitment of its members. Janice Hickey of the Thomas Sherwin Chapter

Janice Hickey joined New England Telephone on July 7, 1971, as a repair clerk in Boston. Her journey with the phone company led her from Boston to Chelsea to Lynn to Salem to Malden, back to Boston, then to Brockton, and over to Marlboro, Ma.

Janice joined the Pioneers as a Junior Pioneer in 1975. She got very involved with the Brockton VA Hospital through the years. Janice has escorted Veterans to numerous outings at VFW Posts, AmVets, Elks and American Legions. She has volunteered thousands of hours bringing them to Brockton Rox games, fishing trips, bowling, and to the movies. She has assisted them in writing holiday cards to their loved ones and entertaining them at monthly pizza parties and birthday parties. Janice also volunteers at the Annual Thomas Sherwin Chapter VA Cook-out in June and has helped out at the Special Olympics Event held on the grounds of the Hospital.

Janice retired from Bell Atlantic on December 30, 1995. She currently is a Member-At-Large for Pilgrim Council and is the Mayflower Life Club's Vice President. Janice now volunteers her week days at the Brockton V.A. Hospital as their crafts person. She purchases supplies and helps the Veterans with their many ceramic, leather and painting craft projects. Through the years Janice has also been involved with Christmas caroling, planting shrubs and flowers at nursing homes, assisting at children's holiday parties, coordinating fundraisers and membership drives, collecting calendars to distribute to the veterans for their rooms at the hospital, shipping coupons overseas to military families, sewing ditty bags and Have-a-Heart Bears, and helping with meals at homeless shelters.
Pioneers packing boxes
Liberty Bell Chapter's Upper Darby Council has held craft classes and map workshops in the conference room at 7200 Chestnut St. in Upper Darby, PA. for more than 30 years. Like many Verizon-PA. buildings that don't have Central Offices, the location was sold last spring. Council President Bud Pipe was able to secure a new location to house supplies and hold classes. On moving day, two metal closets were emptied into boxes for the five-mile trip to the Glenolden C.O where they now have plenty of room for future classes and workshops. Helping Bud with the cleaning out and packing of everything were LM Ellie Dickerson, who chairs several committees, her partner Dick, LM and Craft Chair Edie Adams, and her daughter Janis Burpee. Bud's son, Steve, who is an active Pioneer, used his pick-up truck to move everything.
Walt Malang
Our Life Member Spotlight is on...
Walt Malang of the Verizon West Chapter

Walt has been a Pioneer since 1968. When he retired from GTE in 1987 after a long and successful career he finally had more time to devote to Pioneering and other charitable endeavors. He has held all of the offices in the R. Parker Sullivan Life Member Club including president. Walt also served in all of the offices in the California Chapter of the ITPA including president. He has been on the state scholarship committee every year for the past 17 years. Walt has always taken an active roll in all of the clubs fund raising projects.

Walt began what is now a long tradition of having members of the R. Parker Sullivan Club staff a polling location in Ventura County. They work all elections, city, state and national. He has spearheaded this important project for many years. All of the volunteers donate their pay to the R. Parker Sullivan Club in order to better support their many charities.

His volunteer activities are not relegated to Pioneering. Among other activities he has been on the Board of Directors of a volunteer group, the Conejo Youth Employment Agency for 20 years.
