Back to School
At the beginning of each new school year, the
Verizon TelecomPioneers collect, purchase and distribute school supplies to
children that need them. This year, Suffolk Council collected 26 ink
cartridges from the students at the East Setauket Elementary school while we
were there presenting our various educational projects. Each of these ink
cartridges were turned into Staples office supply store for a $3.00
merchandise coupon. During July and August our members redeemed these
coupons for school supplies while they were on sale. These supplies were
given to the Helping Hand Rescue Mission in Huntington Station. Using these
supplies and others, the mission put together backpacks which were age and
gender appropriate and distributed them on Saturday September 1, 2007.
Chapter and council members were present to watch this very
rewarding presentation given by Rev. Jim and Rose Gaines and their family.
In addition to this, Chapter's Operation Backpack is well underway. 10
filled backpacks were distributed to each club and council of the Paumanok
Chapter,( a total of 10 clubs) and are be distributed throughout Long Island
now. Suffolk Council donated 17 of these filled backpacks to the Brighter
Tomorrows Domestic Violence Shelter. These backpacks have been distributed
to 7 children currently at the shelter and 10 children who have recently
found new homes.

Nursing Home
On July 24 2007, the Nesconset Life Member club and Suffolk Council members
volunteered at the St. James Nursing Home annual picnic luncheon which they
hold for their residents and family members. Each of our members were
assigned a resident to wheel over to the park so these residents may enjoy a
fun filled day. There was live music, a BBQ lunch which consisted of hot
dogs, hamburgers, salads, watermelon, and various soft drinks. The day was
beautiful and the residents enjoyed their outing and many new friends. After
the picnic, our members wheeled our new friend back to their home. We look
forward to next year's picnic.

members decorated these sections with the flags provided by the cemetery,
and on June 2, 2007 we returned to remove the flags and bundle them up for
