Verizon TelecomPioneers are proud of our history as members of the
Telephone Pioneers of America, founded in 1911. Throughout the United
States, Verizon TelecomPioneers have more than 125,000 members, who are
current and former employees of Verizon and their families who contribute
millions of hours of community service each year.
Our volunteer activities are focused on literacy and domestic violence.
In 2008 the Verizon TelecomPioneers expect to distribute our 500,000th
dictionary to a 3rd grader somewhere in the nation. Our efforts ensure that
the youth of our region are better equipped to lead productive, successful
lives. The Verizon Pioneers expect to participated in many domestic
violence projects in 2008 as well. The two notable ones; the Hopeline cell
phone collection project and the Shower for the Shelter initiative.
In 2008, we are partnering with Dr. Tim in his effort to climb Mt.
Everest!! The Verizon Pioneers are hosting weekly conference calls with Dr.
Tim prior to his departure for Nepal, and then will stay in contact with him
via email messages and his posts on his web site - which include updates,
photos and hopefully this year videos. We are also collaborating with
Verizon's Thinkfinity on this initiative. Thinkfinity has online
standards-based curriculum that teachers can use in conjunction with this
exciting educational opportunity.
Verizon TelecomPioneers are also involved in many other projects such as
Special Olympics, painting USA playground maps, helping victims of natural
disasters, sewing Hug-a-Bears to give to children who are victims of crime
or accidents, constructing ramps for wheelchair bound folks, and numerous
other services aimed at improving the quality of life in our communities.
