Fort Pitt Chapter collects school
supplies
It's Fall and back to school time. The Fort
Pitt North Council Pioneers collected school supplies for those in
need in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. The items collected were
donated to the New Castle Rescue Mission. The Pioneers collected
tablets, binders, pens, pencils, crayons and pencil boxes. These
will go a long way to help out the students that are in need.
Fort Pitt also helped with the Homeless Children Education
Fund's "Pack to School" Project. Along with a business office at the
Mega Center in Robinson township, the Pioneers collected items for
school backpacks for homeless children. These backpacks were filled
and delivered to an Allegheny office for its school district. |

Genesee Chapter spruces up house
Partnering with interior designer Anita
Aubertine, Genesee Chapter members helped bring a bright new look to
the interior of Maggie Smith's Eugene Street home on August 27. The
Pioneers styled this project on Trading Spaces, the popular
cable television show where neighbors switch homes for a weekend and
redecorate one room using a $1,000 budget and the services of a
professional interior designer.
The group painted the paneling and ceilings, adding
eye-catching oranges and yellows to the kitchen area and brightening
both rooms with colorful floral-patterned drapes and window
treatments. Most of the $1,000 project budget was spent buying
Ms. Smith a new refrigerator and stove. Ms.
Smith, a retired Rochester school
crossing guard, and her husband, Hollis Quinn, moved into the house
in 1987, and were unable to remodel much before Mr. Quinn died in
2000.

Managing spontaneous volunteers in time of crisis
After 9/11, the Points of Light Foundation,
FEMA, and participants representing 45 non-profit organizations
compiled a manual on how to manage volunteers after natural and
man-made disasters. With Hurricane Ivan barreling toward our coast,
now is a good time to learn more about developing a crisis strategy
that includes information management, volunteer expectations,
consistent terminology, volunteer reception areas, special skills
databases, liability issues, and more.

TelecomPioneer Annual Meeting in San
Antonio
Mark your calendars and plan to attend the
TelecomPioneers Annual Meeting January 21-22 in San Antonio, Texas.
The theme is "Connecting to our Communities." The
centerpiece of the meeting will be the official launch of
“Project Connect,” a series of high-tech computer games that
will soon be shared with school children across Canada and the
United States.
New for this meeting will be the awards that are presented. A
committee of representatives from each of our seven groups has
carefully revamped the awards program to give it a fresh look and
feel – from the on-line submission process to the efforts the awards
recognize.
Plans are being finalized for a community service project that
will support local schools, possibly through the donation of school
supplies. |
