VLC Website Supports Tutor Training
Geneva Templin, director of the Marshall and Ohio Literacy Volunteers and a past West Virginia Chapter president, knows the value of reading. She fondly recalls trips to the library with her mother when she was a child, and how she came to love reading.
As a former Read Aloud volunteer, Templin knows how important reading is to a child’s education. “Unless children are encouraged to read, they are not going to be good students in the future,” Templin says. “Verizon’s literacy programs and funding have been a ‘godsend’ to the Marshall and Ohio Literacy Volunteers — they make it possible to put books into the hands of families that would never be able to afford them otherwise.”
Verizon’s support continues to expand with Verizon Literacy Campus (VLC), a literacy web site developed in partnership with the National Center for Family Literacy and ProLiteracy Worldwide. Thanks to VLC, Templin’s program is now able to complement face-to-face tutor training with online courses available on the web site. She also plans to use VLC resources to help tutors become more comfortable with technology. Visit VLC at
www.literacycampus.org to learn more about how you can make a difference in a literacy student’s life.
West Virginia organizes Book/Coat Drive
Thanks to the partnership of the W. Virginia TelecomPioneers, the Consortium of Information and Technology, and Verizon SuperPages, two W. Virginia State University after-school programs received generous donations of coats, school supplies and books. Students at Park Elementary in Kanawha City, and Littlepage Terrace and Poca Elementary in Charleston benefited from this drive. To date, these partners have contributed a combined $45,000 to these after-school programs.

Thanks to Verizon, the Paumanok TelecomPioneers, and the Freedom Calls Foundation, Cpl. Wilson Caro was able to see his six-week old daughter, Sierra, for the first time. Cpl. Marty Lee selected as TelecomPioneer president
Charles Martin (Marty) Lee, a senior executive from the Junior Achievement (JA) organization, has been named President of TelecomPioneers. Mr. Lee, who served JA for 32 years, will be based in Denver, CO, and will take office on Jan. 1. Mr. Lee replaces Jim Gadd, who has served as Chief Executive Officer since 1999.
Mr. Lee’s title as President reflects a change in titles approved by the Board of Directors. The change eliminates the CEO title and also affects the title of Chairman Mary T. Manning, who had held the dual title of President and Chairman of the Board. “Marty is a strategic thinker with vast experience in the non-profit sector,” said Ms. Manning. “He brings a wealth of skills to the position and a record of success at every level throughout his career.” Read on.
