Mother Goose is real!
This spring, Miss Rita Books and members of the Paumanok Chapter dressed in handmade costumes and visited 17 nursery schools throughout Long Island to present "Mother Goose Fairy Tale Fun."  Mother Goose read to the students and gave each child a fairy tale book to take home.  Each school received a certificate of participation and stickers.
In addition, active employees in Paumanok's area were contacted by intra-company email and offered a free nursery rhyme book for their own children sent to them via company mail. Once books were read, certificates and stickers were sent to the child. All books were branded with our "Verizon Reads with the Pioneers" stickers.
Paumanok reached more than 1,350 children through this program and sparked an interest in reading. For more information on the "Mother Goose Fairy Tale Fun" program, please call the Paumanok Chapter office at 631-661-5590.

Four bells or more for $50... or $12.50 each!
Regularly $18.95 each, these limited-edition glass bell paperweights are almost sold out! Remaining colors include Pale Green, Light Blue, Blue and Pink. They were cast in the original Fenton Artists mold used to produce recognition items for Theodore Vail, the first president of New England Telephone (1883) and AT&T. A true collector's item! The words "Bell System" are embossed on the sides of this 2" tall by 2-1/4" wide bell. Each bell is handcast, inspected, stamped and the date stamp destroyed. Order here.

WJ Denver celebrates birthdays with backpacks!
Working with partner agencies, the WJ Denver Chapter reached out to the families of children from social and economic backgrounds whose families might otherwise find it difficult to have a birthday party for their child. They provided 80 families with backpacks that contained party supplies, gifts, cake mix, frosting and candles. In keeping with WJ Denver's literacy goal, chapter members also included a book for the birthday child. The estimated value of each backpack was approximately $50.00.
Council and Club members partnered with local groups such as the Bristol County Agricultural High School National Honor Society and Girl Scouts of America as well as engaging employee and Life Member Clubs to make this project a successful one. Learn more...

Vermont Council rehabs women's shelter
On August 7, the Vermont Council of the Jasper Keller Chapter gave a face lift to the children's room at Laurie's House, a battered women's shelter in St. Albans, Vermont.  Laurie's House can house up to 10 residents at a time, and sadly more often than not when women come to the shelter they often have children with them.  When Pioneers first went to the shelter their children's room was nothing more than a sun room with a few used books and stuffed animals.
After raising over $500 for the project, the council commissioned Pioneer Partner, Marvin Alderman, to make shelves, cabinets, and toy boxes for the room.  Members were able to fill the room with books, educational toys, games, flash cards, and art supplies. They also provided bean bag chairs to snuggle into with a good book, as well as an art table.  All items that were not purchased by the council were donations of Pioneer Partners.
Laurie's House had requested a "space theme." After painting the room, members covered the ceiling with constellations and the walls with stars, the solar system, and a few Martians sharing a good book.

Remembering those lost on Sept. 11
Pioneers can help honor victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, by participating in One Day’s Pay, a volunteer initiative designed to establish September 11th as a day of service, charity and compassion.  The mission of One Day’s Pay is to encourage individuals, businesses and organizations everywhere to set aside time every year on or around September 11th to help others in need. The goal of One Day’s Pay is for more than 30 million people to actively participate annually by 2010, making September 11 one of the most widely observed days of service in American history.
