West VA Seasons Readings Kick-off a Success
by: Donna Mayfield
Our Seasons Readings Kick-off was fantastic! The governor's wife, Mrs. Gayle Manchin, came and read The Polar Express to the kids. We put the words and pictures on a big screen in the background, so the kids could read along with her. Our local newspaper, The Charleston Daily Mail and WSAZ Channel 3 TV also came and took pictures and videotaped. The Sissonville Show Choir performed several tunes and passed out candy to the kids.
Our beneficiary was the West Virginia State University After School Family Literacy Program. Its director, Krystal Smith, along with the children from the Spring Hill Housing Project After School Program, also attended. Partnering with the Verizon Consortium of Information and Telecommunications Executives, we presented over 1,000 books.
After the program, all the children went to the cafeteria where Santa Claus entertained all the children. Each child got his or her picture taken with Santa Claus, received refreshments and a goody bag with two books and a Seasons Readings t-shirt. The children sang with a Karaoke machine & found states on a Pioneers U.S. map rug. Pioneers also delivered the 911 program.

Clarksburg LM Club Presents Touch Turner
Brandon Billings, a 6th grader at Robert L. Bland Middle School in Lewis County, has Cerebral palsy and loves to read. However, his disability has made it challenging to turn the pages of a book. The Clarksburg LM Club of the West Virginia Chapter presented him with a Touch Turner, which allows Brandon to use an adaptor that lets a machine know to turn the page. A wheel that is covered with clay lifts up the page, sticks and pulls the page forward, and a lever then turns the page.

A Life Member Moment... Remembering Luther Buckbee
A fine Pioneer, Luther Buckbee passed away Nov. 24, 2004, after a long illness. Luther served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a radioman, and there set his long career in radio and communication system. Luther worked for New York Telephone and NYNEX from 1949 until his retirement in1985. He started as a lineman and finished as an instructor at the upstate training center in Albany.
For 32 years, Luther was a member of the Mountain Valley Chapter of the TelecomPioneers. After retirement, he joined the Albany Life Member Club. He donated countless hours to the Talking Book for the Blind program, painting school playground maps and many other pioneer programs. In 1992, Luther was among the first to be elected into the Pioneer Hall of Fame. He also gave many hours repairing toys in a pioneer partnership with the Albany PAL. Luther was also a Boy Scout leader for over 25 years and a founding member of his church. We will surely miss Luther Buckbee.
