Queens Council helps
raise $10K for Juvenile Diabetes Research
by: Martin Gnolfo, Pres.-Queens Council
On a beautiful sunny October Sunday, Queens Council put the
finishing touches to months of hard work in getting walkers and
sponsors for our Annual 10K Juvenile Diabetes Research Walk, at the
site of New York's 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows Park. The
Queens Council, with the support of fellow Pioneer members
throughout Queens work locations and donations from the Community,
made this walk a success by raising $10,000!
It was nice to see the many people who came out early to help
with whatever was needed! Queens Council would like to thank all the
brave people who walked and those who could not, but came to the
walk and showed support for finding a cure to this terrible disease.
Thanks go to the Pioneer Clowns who worked very, very hard for all
the children at the event. Thanks also go to Oueens Whitman Life
Members. |

Vermont Council paints playground map
at Essex Elementary
by: Jessica Norkon
On August 14, the Vermont Council
painted a map for the Essex Town Elementary Echool. We had a great
turn out and a gorgeous day! Pioneer members that volunteered
inclued Deanne Kryzinski, Jessica Norkon, Theresa Gingras, Anne
McGrath, Nicole Morningstar, Galandrille Richmond, Danielle Petrie
and Margery Haselman. It was a great family day with additional help
from Pioneer family members Olivia Petrie, Catherine Mcgrath, Sara
Gingras and Josh Norkon. We all worked together and, before we knew
it, we had a beautiful map and a great learning tool for the
students at the Essex Elementary School. The PTA and school members
were very appreciative, and eager for us to plan more maps for
Vermont area schools next year. |

Framingham Council hosts Math Challenge
by: Ann Cove, president - Framingham Council
On May 7, the Framingham Council of the WJ Denver Chapter met
at the Price Chopper in Marlboro, Ma. to host a Math Challenge for
approximately 450 elementary students from the Jaworek, Kane and
Richer Schools. First, the TelecomPioneers put stickers on the
clipboards that said they were donated by the TelecomPioneers,
Framingham Council, William J. Denver Chapter and had the
TelecomPioneer and Pioneer logo as well as the website address and
Chapter telephone number.
Then we collated the written material that was provided by the
Richer School and printed by Price Chopper and put it on the
clipboard. As the students came into the store with their parents,
they signed in and were given a clipboard and told how to use the
attached map. Stations were set up all over the store and the
students went to each station and played a math game. For instance,
at one station they were shown a shape and had to find an item on
the grocery shelves that was that shape. After they completed all
stations, they went to a central location where they were given a
bag of goodies, which included fruit, cookies, candy, a
TelecomPioneer pencil, etc. It was a very challenging evening for
everyone. |

Leslie Cabanach receives New Pioneer
of the Year Award
by:
Lorraine Gettis, president - Paumanok Chapter
Leslie Cabanach from thePaumanok Chapter's
Suffolk Council began her Pioneer career three years ago. She is
enthusiastic and a doer. Leslie was the environmental chair last
year and got the council involved in several new projects. She set
up an area in her office to collect all the things the Pioneers
collect -- from tabs to eye glasses. She calls it "the giving
corner." That wasn't enough for Leslie. She got a lot of others to
do the same in different buildings. She also shares our cause and
recruits co-workers with her excitement. On several projects, she
has brought her co-workers along. She encourages others and is full
of the Pioneer spirit. Leslie also runs Pioneer Day in her building.
She always assists in our fundraising efforts. Her energy is endless
when it comes to helping those in need. This term, she is the
publicity person and has put together a great newsletter for our
active employees in Suffolk County. |
