WJ Denver volunteers in their
PAJAMAS!
Teaming with the national Pajama Program, the
Verizon Seasons Readings program, and Verizon's Network Services
Group-Mid Atlantic Region, the WJ Denver Pioneers hosted Pajama
Day at 251 Locke Dr. in Marlboro, Mass., on December 13. They
collected more than 125 pairs of pajamas and 100 books.
In conjunction to the pajama and book drive, Annmarie Hickey
Georgopolis, a Verizon retiree, signed 40 copies of her children's
book, "An American Flag for Their Father." Proceeds from her book
sale were donated to the Holyoke Soldiers Home in Holyoke, MA.
Pioneers and Network employees from more than 45 Verizon
locations participated in the Pajama Campaign in November and
December. "This is amazing! Verizon's donation is the largest we
have received from one organization and will provide pajamas and
books for 5,095 children," said Pajama Program founder, Genevieve
Piturro.
The Pajama Program, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization,
provides warm pajamas and books to needy children in the United
States and around the world, many of whom are waiting and hoping to
be adopted. Visit

Yes, Texas, there is a Santa Claus
The Pete Heiden Club hosted its annual holiday
party for children on Saturday, December 10. More than 100 children,
ages 5 - 8, from City Park Elementary School in Dallas, one of the
lowest income schools in the area, enjoyed lunch, games, crafts,
face painting, caroling, and a visit with Santa. The Claus' and elf
crew arrived by helicopter courtesy of Santa USA. Santa is Rick
Deleon, a VIS employee, and Mrs. Claus is Rick's wife. Hundreds of
employees have helped host this event for more than 10 years. The
Pete Heiden Club has members in the Irving and Dallas/Fort Worth,
Texas area. It is part of the Verizon West Chapter. |

Support literacy efforts
The Verizon
Literacy Campus now offers a new course, “How Can My Organization
Get Involved in Literacy" that will help you assess your chapter’s
capacity to assist literacy initiatives through effective
partnerships with literacy organizations in your area. The contents
of this course will help you learn about the variety of literacy
programs, explore the four roles your organization can play,
evaluate the best level of support your organization can provide,
create an action plan with a local literacy program, and evaluate
the success of your partnership. To learn more, visit Verizon
Literacy Campus at

Watching over the needy
The Paumanok Chapter and Dan the Watchman
invite you to participate in helping distribute watches to the
needy. In 2005, Paumanok life members hosted drives to collect used
watches from employees. In addition, Dan spent 220 hours and $1,290,
and drove 1,993 miles buying watches at garage sales and
refurbishing them. The chapter distributed 2,078 watches to nursing
homes, domestic violence shelters, unwed mothers homes, and homeless
shelters.
The Paumanok Chapter would like to expand this program by
asking you to help us collect and distribute the watches. If those
you are serving have special needs, such as extra large watch faces
for those who are visually challenged, we can help. We ask in return
that you let us know what organization or project received the
watches for our records.
For more information, contact the Paumanok Chapter at
631.661.5768 or Chapter85@aol.com. |

Did you know that...
A woman is
beaten every 15 seconds... that domestic violence is the leading
cause of injury of women between ages 15 and 44 in the United States
– more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined... that
63% percent of the young men between the ages of 11 and 20 who are
serving time for homicide have killed their mother’s abuser?
In
October 2005, during domestic violence month, Mountain Valley
Chapter Pioneers at 10 County Center Road in White Plains, NY,
helped with the Corporate Caring Bag program. They donated enough
personal hygiene items to fill 130 bags for My Sisters Place, a
local domestic violence shelter in Westchester County, NY. |
