Reach Out and Read
Members of the Framingham TelecomPioneers Council of the WJ Denver Chapter and WAVE (Women's Association of Verizon Employees) recently delivered more than 400 children's books to the Reach Out and Read program at Marlboro Hospital. Through this program, children visiting the hospital may take home a book they find in the waiting area. (Photo: L-R) Marlboro Hospital's HR Director Thomas Cady, Marlboro Hospital's Public Affairs representative Robert McCrystal, and Ann Cove, WJ Denver Chapter President and member of WAVE.

Fort Pitt Chapter supports job shadowing
On April 28, the Pioneers in the New Castle, Penn., Engineering office participated in Verizon's Bring Your Child to Work Day. The five children who shadowed their parents helped make Hug-A-Bears and learned about the 911 Emergency System that is sponsored by the Fort Pitt TelecomPioneers Chapter. According to past chapter president, Kim Scranton, "The kids really enjoyed working with the 911 unit and found it to be very helpful in teaching them different emergency situations." Photo above was taken in the 911 Unit.

The Life Member Spotlight is on... Howard Ross
Howard Ross started with the New York Telephone Company in 1960 with the Central Office and Building Engineering group in Hempstead, NY. As an Electrical Engineer by profession he held a variety of management positions and retired after 30 years of service in 1990 as an Associate Director. As soon as Howard was eligible, he became an active Pioneer and served as a Manhattan Council Group Representative. Following retirement he was assigned to the South Bay Life Member Club. An active community leader, his affiliation with the Seaford Lions Club gave rise to the idea to expand his used eyeglass project there with the Lions to include all of the Pioneers in Paumanok Chapter. His proposal was accepted and he became a Chapter approved project director for the purpose of collecting used eyeglasses. The eyeglasses are collected and then distributed to those less fortunate with vision problems. His work to date has resulted in the collection of over 215,000 eyeglasses or about 14,000 per year since he started this project. Howard has also been President of the South Bay Life Member Club all the while continuing to serve as Chapter Project Director for Used Eyeglasses.

50+ Volunteering
According to Marc Freedman of Prime Time, "America's burgeoning older population is poised to become the new trustees of civic life in this country. These individuals have the time to care; they have the skills and experience required; they have the personal need to contribute in new ways. This match, between the untapped resources of older americans and the needs of American communities, constitutes the great opportunity presented by America's aging."
If you lead volunteers older than 50 years, you might be interested in downloading a copy of the Points of Light Foundation's new handbook, "50+, Volunteering for Stronger Communities." This handbook provides effective practices, tips and suggestions to create volunteer opportunities that will attract and sustain the interests of 50+ volunteers. Go to

Verizon Foundation Resource Center
The Verizon Foundation has launched an online resource center designed to help nonprofit organizations operate more efficiently. The Resource Center, located at http://foundation.verizon.com/resourcecenter, provides free
access to a national database of technology resources to assist nonprofits round the clock, seven days a week. The center also offers training and online tools ranging from strategies to enhance marketing and communications, to finding technology resources, to techniques to increase fundraising. The foundation will fund 1,200 awards -- available first come, first-served -- to pay for the training and urges employees and retirees to tell their preferred nonprofit groups about the new Resource Center and the valuable training available.
