WJ Denver Chapter
Assists Teen Mothers
The WJ Denver Chapter purchased three new computers, a printer
and a digital camera for the Helen Berube Teen Parent Program.
Pioneers Bruce Lambert (in photo), Gary Burris, Chris Casino, and
Lori Stanton set up the computers on a wireless network. These
computers will help the girls with their education and eventually
job hunting.
Located in the back of St. Theresa’s Church in Pittsfield,
Mass., the program helps pregnant teens and new teenage moms
continue with their education. The girls are able to acquire their
GED or high school diploma through the program. The program
currently has 27 students enrolled and can accommodate up to 45.
There is an onsite daycare with 10 babies attending and a fulltime
nurse to help with medical needs. The program is almost entirely
privately funded. The local School Department does provide eight
tutors. |

Congrats,
Paumanok!
The Paumanok Chapter received the "Connecting
Technology and our Troops" Telecom Challenge Award for its “Voice
Over Internet Protocol” project. Led by Lorraine Gettis, this
project took place on the USMC base in Garden City, NY, on Dec. 10,
2004. Approximately 150 family members had the opportunity to see
and speak to their loved ones in Iraq. The Marines, reservists from
Long Island, came in off the front lines and sat before video
equipment to visit live with their families. One Marine saw his
newborn for the first time and another family was able to see their
son who was shot in battle over the Thanksgiving weekend. Joining
the Pioneers that day were two units from the USMC, FreedomCalls.org,
the Marine Family Support Unit, the media, and Verizon technicians
and management employees. Paumanok continues to send care packages
to the troops. |

The Life Member Spotlight is on Susie
Jones...
A member of the Old Dominion Chapter, Susie
truly exemplifies all aspects of the Pioneer Triangle Emblem of
Fellowship, Loyalty and Service. She is active in the community as
well as in all Pioneer activities. She promotes every project by
spending hours on the telephone calling to secure workers for them.
She sees the need and immediately acts upon it. Susie is a strong
supporter of all literacy projects and strives to sign up all
employees as a Pioneer. She continues to volunteer at Jefferson
Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson’s summer home. For the last 18
months as the Chapter Life Member Representative, she has visited
most of the councils, listened to their concerns, and kept them
informed as to what is going on in Pioneering. Susie willingly gives
of her time and energies serving her community and the
TelecomPioneers. |

Kinnard's Sports Jamboree a success!
The Kinnard Chapter held its 23rd Annual Sports
Jamboree June 24-26 at Fort Indiantown Gap. While the weather was
very hot, the competition was even hotter. There were 38 wheelchair,
blind or legally blind contestants competing in sporting events such
as the 40 yard dash, Frisbee throw, basketball throw, archery, beep
basketball and baseball, golf putting, horseshoe toss, and
basketball games.
The chapter provided more than 300 volunteers and 19,000
volunteer hours for the weekend. On Saturday night, the chapter
hosted the Jamboree IDOL, in which the contestants either sang their
favorite song or played their favorite instrument. A panel of three
judges evaluated the participants and each contestant received a
recording of his or her performance. On Sunday, the chapter hosted
closing ceremonies in which each contestant was awarded a medal with
stars that showed their determination for the weekend. Chapter
members learned a lesson this weekend: no matter how well you do in
each of your events, as long as you try your best, you are always a
winner. |

Warren LMC
Holds Hug-A-Bear Workshop
On April 12, the Warren Life Member Club of the
McCully Upstate Chapter held a workshop at the American Legion Hall
in Hackettstown to trace and cut out hug-a-bears. Nine members
participated in the workshop. Coffee and homemade zucchini bread
were available to all who attended. The participants traced and cut
out 76 hug-a-bears. In addition to the hug-a-bears, club members had
an opportunity to take a break from cutting and work on sorting
pictures for the club's bookmark project. Members of the Warren Life
Member Club will now take the hug-a-bears, sew them, add faces and
bring them to the next workshop to stuff and prepare for delivery. |
