Paumanok Partners support homeless vets
On July 26, the Paumanok Chapter visited the Salvation Army Homeless Veteran's Residence as part of its year long partner project. All 10 service groups ran a food drive in the month of July to stock the food pantry and had their hobby clubs make red, white, and blue afghans for the veterans.
Over the last several months, Paumanok helped the veterans create a thriving vegetable garden to supplement their meals. During the July 26 project, members placed a branded victory garden sign in the garden. The veterans maintain the garden.
Throughout the year, the Paumanok Chapter collects gently used suitcases and toiletries for the veterans to use while in the shelter. The shelter houses veterans from all eras while they work toward establishing themselves and deal with problems that help them to cope with life's daily functions. Although people view veterans as being older, many of the residents are very young and just returned from Iraq.

The Life Member Spotlight is on...
Pat McInnis
By Kathy Conway,
Sherwin Chapter

Pat McInnis is a Pioneer
who always does her best.
She's on the go, ready to serve,
and never seems to rest.

From special needs to military troops
and childhood Christmas wishes,
she likes to help with everything
from cookies to main dishes.

When you think of Pat, you always see
a busy, happy soul
who takes her place, and sets the pace.
She takes an active role.

She can install an officer or soothe a friend.
An errand she'll run if you're on the mend.
She doesn't ask, but always gives.
The Pioneer oath is what she lives!

Two for One!
Whether at the pool, beach or the lake, now is the time to stretch out on this thick cotton/polyester beach towel! Measuring 60 x 33 inches, this U.S.-made white towel has the Pioneer logo screened in the center. Now two for $16, plus shipping. Visit http://www.verizonpioneers.org/EStoreTowel.htm.

Winners Abound at West Virginia Sports Jamboree
The West Virginia Chapter hosted 34 contestants at the 26th Annual International Sports Jamboree at North Bend State Park.
Participants from Canada and the United States competed in various events designed for visually impaired or wheelchair contestants. Pioneer members from Verizon, AT&T, New Outlook, Telcordia and Qwest all supported the event with financial contributions or volunteer service.
Events included air rifle, basketball free-throws, wheelchair basketball, 40-yard dash, a softball game, Frisbee throw and horseshoes.
The jamboree also captured the attention of local media, which featured the activities in at least four local newspapers.

Contestants put forth their best efforts during Saturday’s competitions and were rewarded for their accomplishments with at least three medals each during Saturday evening’s awards ceremony.  After the awards were presented, the contestants displayed their singing, poetry, musical and comedy abilities during the Talent Show.

One final award was presented to Dean McCoy, who was responsible for wheelchair repair throughout the weekend.  McCoy earned the 2004 Howard MacDonald Award for extraordinary contributions as he kept the wheelchairs in peak operating condition.

Congratulations to Chairman Jimmy Stine and his team for organizing an outstanding event!

WJ Denver distributes 3,058 books!
Active and life members distributed "A Book About Me," a personalized reader, to 3,058 students in 164 classrooms at 45 schools in the Western Massachusetts and Rhode Island area. Kickoffs were held in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Keshawn E. Dodds of the Mayor's office addressed the children, and in Warwick, Rhode Island, where the Mayor spoke. Many of the children commented that their parents "had Verizon" and were aware of the "Verizon/Red Sox" summer reading program in Massachusetts.
