Help Katrina victims with 2-to-1 Match for Red Cross donations
The Verizon Foundation has established a special disaster relief program to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Employees can triple the amount of their gifts by donating to the American Red Cross. The foundation will match 2-to-1 your contribution, up to $2,500 per year in disaster relief donations, with a cap of $250,000 overall, to support relief efforts by the Red Cross through September 30. For details, go to http://foundation.verizon.com/katrina.shtml.
Retirees may donate to the American Red Cross by sending checks to:

Learning about
helping others
On July 27, the WJ Denver Chapter's Framingham Council in Mass. helped host an Employee Volunteer Opportunities Fair. The New England Transport Technical Support Team co-sponsored this event at 251 Locke Drive in Marlboro. The three-hour event brought together employee resource groups so that employees could see the kind of resources available to them for information and volunteering. There were games, food, give-aways, and drawings. The Council signed up four new members and distributed many more applications. They gave away information packets, lanyards, flags, Pioneer and FiOs pencils and Verizon Reads book competition flyers. They also had a drawing for a Pioneer truck, Boyds Bear, Pioneer triangle and Pioneer socks. The event brought all the employees together for a fun and informative day.  view more pics...   (Photo: Dawn Stuller stands beside the display she created.)

The Life Member Spotlight is on... Janice Hickey
Janice has been a Pioneer since 1982. She's currently serving as Vice President of the Mayflower Life Member Club and a member of the Pilgrim Council executive board. During her Pioneering years, she has captured and performed her duties with extraordinary energy and commitment. From making Hug-a-bears to being a Brownie troop leader, Janice brings her love of life and laughter to making all her projects a success.
The Brockton Veterans Hospital has recognized Janice Hickey’s service efforts of over 1,250 hours in their Volunteer Recognition Program. For the past 20 years, she has been helping with dances, bowling, monthly pizza and birthday parties, card writing and the annual BBQ. She is instrumental in the collection, cutting and mailing of coupons for various military personnel overseas and collections for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
You can always find Janice preparing and serving meals at the Coalition for the Homeless in Brockton monthly. Her frugality has resulted in larger donations to the food pantries, homeless shelters and crisis centers. Her dedication and service to the Pioneers over the years has made a tremendous impact in raising the quality of life of many people.

Announcing... revisions to the Telecom Challenge Awards
In early August, the Telecom Challenge Award Guidelines were revised to streamline the program and make the entry process easier. Following are highlights of the changes:
     · Categories revised from 6 to 4 (still incorporate the same potential impact)
     · 8 cash awards – one winner and one runner-up in each category
     · Timeline aligns w/ International Awards Program and extension gives
Pioneers more time to complete the project before reporting on it for the
       awards process.
     · Each group can recommend a total of 8 of their best projects for final judging consideration
     · All previous entered projects, even those that have won in the past are eligible – but they must
       be significantly enhanced.
     · Registrations and reports are to be sent electronically to the Association Program Manager
and the group VP and/or Review Team Leader by the applicant.
To view the new guidelines, go to http://www.telecompioneers.org/awards/telecomchallenge.asp.
