W.J. Denver Chapter receives $26,200 in TPA Foundation Grants
The TelecomPioneers Association has awarded the W.J. Denver Chapter in Springfield, Mass., $26,200 in Foundation Grants to fund its Chapter Education 6-Pack project. Through the end of the school year, members will present four school systems with funding and volunteers for six projects: Project Connect, Scholastic Books, "A Student’s Dictionary," and maps of the United States and the Solar System, and a USA map rug. The grants will be allocated as follows: North Adams School System, $2,620; Palmer School System, $1,310; Pittsfield School System, $6,812; Rhode Island School System, $15,458.
The impact on the recipient entity will be multi-faceted. All third graders will get their own dictionary. All students in grades 4 through 7 will have access to Project:Connect. The libraries will receive thousands of Scholastic books. USA maps will be available both outside and inside, and an outdoor solar system map will allow all students to walk among the planets. Due to the hands on games associated with the MAPS and Project Connect and the fun quiz associated with the Student’s Dictionary, chapter members expect the students to retain more, therefore enabling them to score better on state-mandated MCAS testing.

Dodds funding goes to W.J. Denver Chapter
The W.J. Denver Chapter received two grants to support its impact projects from the TelecomPioneers Dodds Foundation. The first grant of $2,500 will assist with the purchase of a Verifit System for the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Mass. The Verifit System is a hearing aid analyzer required for all patients when fitting them for a hearing aid.
The Berkshire Council of the W.J. Denver Chapter received $2,191.30 to help fund the chapter's Education 6-Pack program in North Adams School. W.J. Denver is the only Verizon chapter to receive grants from the Dodds Fund this year.

The Life Member Spotlight is on... Joan Mahon
The McCully Downstate Chapter is proud of its exemplary life member, Joan Mahon. She is in her third term as president of the Trenton-Burlington LMC in N.J. She also is co-chair of the Sport Jamboree, spending hundreds of hours on-site. Joan is active with the following projects: Mt. Carmel Guild, Membership, Clown (Pinky), Hug-A-Bear, Beach Cleanup, Dreamlift, Tournament of Champions, and Day on the Bay. "She is always ready, willing and able to do anything she is called upon to do," said George Albright, chapter president.

Paumanok Chapter shares the Christmas spirit
The Paumanok Chapter's Suffolk Council hosted a Christmas party for the Little Flower Children's Orphanage in Wading River, New York, Sat., Dec. 2. More than 50 children attended the gathering and received toys, blankets and comforters collected from Verizon employees in Suffolk. The Pioneers hosted the party and served lunch and refreshments while Santa and a magician delighted the children. It was truly a magical day. First time volunteers were so moved by the event they have asked to come back again.
