Third Graders Get Dictionaries
Thanks to Verizon West Pioneers
Verizon West TelecomPioneer Clubs across the nation recently participated in a chapter-wide project to provide dictionaries to third-grade students in their communities. Verizon West ordered the books through The Dictionary Project. The goal of their program is to assist all third-grade students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing the students with their own personal dictionaries. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. A total of 7,568 dictionaries were presented to school districts in five states by the Hi-Desert Pioneer Club (Victorville, CA), the Norwesco Pioneer Club (Everett, WA), the Walter G. Wright Pioneer Club (Bloomington, IL), the Pete Heiden Metroplex Pioneer Club (DFW, TX), and the Triangle Pioneer Club (Durham, NC). Verizon Public Affairs donated 632 of the books.

Sherwin helps Veterans
The first Tuesday in December, the Pilgrim Council of the Sherwin Chapter created a special night for the residents of Brockton Veterans Hospital Building #4. The Pioneers brought in pizza and soda and read to the residents in the recreation room. They also helped the residents write and send their holiday cards. To top the evening off, the Pioneers presented two laptop computers for the bedridden. These computers will make a world of difference for those veterans who do not have the mobility to reach the onsite computer facilities. Making the presentation are Richard Matthews, Mayflower Life President; Dan Carnali, Sherwin President; and Jim Brogan, Sherwin VP.
