James Earl Jones visits Pioneer after-school program
On January 13, James Earl Jones read to 700
students from seven elementary, middle and junior high schools in
Charleston, West Virginia. Shelley Moore Capito, R-WVA, also
attended the event, which was held at West Virginia State
University. Jones was in town to promote literacy and the
University's after-school program. The Verizon Foundation donated
$45,000 to the program last October. The Pioneers provide volunteers
to serve the 80 student participants in the program.
Jones told students what it was like to use acting to overcome
a stuttering problem as a child, and how he also deals with
dyslexia. "This is good practice for me," he said. "That's why
you're not up here reading." |

What are our life members doing now?
Jack Ryan's in Texas
Jack Ryan joined the Staten Island Club of the
Nova Five Chapter in the mid seventies. His first position was
public relations chairman. In 1979, he received the Brooklyn Council
and Carl Whitmore Chapter Pioneer of the Year award for his work in
establishing a blind bowling program on Staten Island. In 1980-1981,
he served as Brooklyn Council president.
After retiring, Jack sold his home on Staten Island and bought
a ranch in Texas. He joined an organization called Loners on Wheels,
composed of single persons who own RVs. They meet at least once a
month at campouts and have dance rallies. He has visited 45 of the
original 48 states in his travels. He still owns property in
Pennsylvania and spends July and August there in his motor home to
get away from the very hot Texas weather. |
