Quality Leadership... Magical Results
More than 130 V/F/T TelecomPioneers attended the TPA Annual Meeting in Orlando Feb. 9-11. The V/F/T TelecomPioneer Group Meeting kicked off on Thursday with Key Operating Committee chairs meeting their new 2006 members. They immediately began planning the 2006 Group Training and Recognition Conference by following up on committees' action items and discussing the training requirements survey feedback. The chairs voted to host the conference November 9-11 in Nashville, Tennessee.
On Friday, with the meeting theme of “Quality Leadership…Magical Results,” attendees learned through the keynote speakers and educational seminars how proper leadership can positively impact volunteerism. The Disney Institute kicked off the business session with its world-class "Leadership Excellence" presentation. Attendees learned how Disney has continually revitalized its vision over the years -- and how Pioneer leaders can help their organization do the same.
Verizon TelecomPioneers also attended workshops for Family Philanthropy, Tomorrow's Pioneering Today, Membership Recruitment, and the rollout of the updated MBNA program, which now includes World Points. A Projects Speed Session showcased seven projects executed in different chapters, including our Dictionary project.
A Showcase of Vendors and Chapter projects was held in the Expo center. The V/F/T TelecomPioneers had a project booth showcasing more than 10 projects with information other chapters could take back and customize in their area. We also had an Estore booth selling various Estore and chapter items.
More than 900 Pioneers from the United States and Canada convened at this Annual Meeting.

Top Honors
The V/F/T TelecomPioneers received five international awards at the TelecomPioneer Annual Meeting. Congratulations to the McCully Downstate and W.J. Denver chapters for earning Chapter of Excellence awards. Hats off to the Maryland Chapter, which was presented with the Community Impact Award. Kudos to the Paumanok Chapter for receiving a Project Excellence Award in recognition of its Grow Education initiative. And a round of applause goes to the V/F/T TelecomPioneers for being the only group to be honored with a Project Excellence Award, which was presented for the Dictionary Project.
McCully Downstate Chapter President George Albright, Audrey Harris (Past President), and Ann Cove (W.J. Denver Chapter President) display their chapters' new awards.
The V/F/T Projects booth is staffed by Jim Cilione, president of the Liberty Bell Chapter.
Bruce Yennie and his partner, Diane, staff the V/F/T Estore booth.
Divestiture Env. & Bell Pin Set
While cleaning out the attic of the Central Office building on 24 Federal Street in Pittsfield, MA, Pioneers discovered 250 #10 envelopes featuring a “Volunteer lend a hand” 20¢ stamp and a special postmark stamped, “Boston, MA, Dec 31 1983.” The envelopes were never used. $6.50 plus shipping.
To commemorate the heritage of the Bell logo, the Verizon TelecomPioneers produced a collectible set of six special lapel pins. Each pin is dated and set on a black velvet background and displayed in a clear acrylic case. $20.95 plus shipping. Learn more...
The Life Member Spotlight is on... Domenic Chiavaroli
Liberty Bell Chapter salutes Domenic Chiavaroli for his devotion to Pioneering. For many years Domenic has given of his time and expertise while holding various offices within the organization. He often volunteers at Ronald McDonald House, Wills Eye Hospital eye screenings, and many other worthwhile causes. At the present, Domenic is serving as the Chapter Treasurer and as a Member at Large. Domenic is also a member of the Mummers String Band and proudly represents the Downtowners String Band Club as he struts up Broad Street in Center City Philadelphia on New Years Day each year in competition with other string bands. No matter what the task, he commits himself 100%. Thank you, Domenic, for helping us to answer the call of those in need.

Wood to Wonderful
Five volunteers from the Reading Pioneer Club read to children at Amanda Stout Elementary School in Reading, PA each month as part of the Wood to Wonderful “Reading is Toyrific” program. Wood to Wonderful, a non-profit organization that promotes reading to young people, received a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation.
“Reading is Toyrific” provides a hard-back book and a toy relating to the book each month to every student in Pre-K through first grade in three different schools in the Reading School District. This program impacts 750 children in total, with 275 kids at the Amanda Stout School.
The Reading Pioneer Club has given dictionaries from the Pioneer Dictionary Project to the school. Principal Michael Stralo uses the books as awards for children who have completed an assignment or project. He said he has seen a difference in the achievement levels of children who have earned a dictionary and that more children are working harder to earn one of their own.

Congratulations, Patchogue LMC members!
Four members of the Patchogue Life Member Club, Paumanok Chapter, received the President's Volunteer Service award. This award recognizes dedicated volunteers who have served their community and country with distinction. The four honorees were pinned by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program that sponsors the soup kitchen where these individuals have been serving every Tuesday for the last 15 years.
Every Tuesday, Ina May Krauer, Phyllis Ahrens, and Harriet and Charlie Coll cook, serve, and visit with more than 50 homeless people who visit the Bethany Hospitality Soup Kitchen in Central Islip, New York. All four volunteers received a letter and a certificate from the President of the United States, and the President's Council on Service and Civic Particiption.
