Quality
Leadership... Magical Results
More than 130 V/F/T TelecomPioneers attended
the TPA Annual Meeting in Orlando Feb. 9-11. The V/F/T
TelecomPioneer Group Meeting kicked off on Thursday with Key
Operating Committee chairs meeting their new 2006 members. They
immediately began planning the 2006 Group Training and Recognition
Conference by following up on committees' action items and
discussing the training requirements survey feedback. The
chairs voted to host the conference November 9-11 in Nashville,
Tennessee.
On Friday, with the meeting theme of “Quality
Leadership…Magical Results,” attendees learned through the keynote
speakers and educational seminars how proper leadership can
positively impact volunteerism. The Disney Institute kicked off the
business session with its world-class "Leadership Excellence"
presentation. Attendees learned how Disney has continually
revitalized its vision over the years -- and how Pioneer leaders can
help their organization do the same.
Verizon TelecomPioneers also attended workshops for Family
Philanthropy, Tomorrow's Pioneering Today, Membership Recruitment,
and the rollout of the updated MBNA program, which now includes
World Points. A Projects Speed Session showcased seven projects
executed in different chapters, including our Dictionary project.
A Showcase of Vendors and Chapter projects was held in the Expo
center. The V/F/T TelecomPioneers had a project booth
showcasing more than 10 projects with information other chapters
could take back and customize in their area. We also had an Estore
booth selling various Estore and chapter items.
More than 900 Pioneers from the United States and Canada
convened at this Annual Meeting.

Wood to Wonderful
Five volunteers from the Reading Pioneer Club read to children
at Amanda Stout Elementary School in Reading, PA each month as part
of the Wood to Wonderful “Reading is Toyrific” program. Wood to
Wonderful, a non-profit organization that promotes reading to young
people, received a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation.
“Reading is Toyrific” provides a hard-back book and a toy
relating to the book each month to every student in Pre-K through
first grade in three different schools in the Reading School
District. This program impacts 750 children in total, with 275 kids
at the Amanda Stout School.
The Reading Pioneer Club has given dictionaries from the
Pioneer Dictionary Project to the school. Principal Michael Stralo
uses the books as awards for children who have completed an
assignment or project. He said he has seen a difference in the
achievement levels of children who have earned a dictionary and that
more children are working harder to earn one of their own.
