Sports Reading Program
On Sept. 23, the McCully Upstate and Downstate Chapters teamed up with the NAACP, Newark's Division of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Wayne's Police Athletic League, and Edison's Youth Job Corp. to provide a Sports Reading Program to 170 fifth and sixth graders from Pop Warner's Football groups. The children met at the Rutger's Athletic Center in Piscataway, NJ where they were given "treats," a copy of the Star Ledger newspaper, a copy of Sports Illustrated magazine, and a Pioneer Tshirt. More than 50 volunteers sat in groups and explained to the kids the different sections of the newspaper - where they can get all kinds of information from local & world news, weather, movies, and jobs. Many had never even opened a paper before. After that, everyone boarded shuttle buses to Rutgers Stadium for the football game, where lunch was provided for all.
JodiePritchard
Josie Pritchard, a retired 70-year-old Division Public Affairs Manager for GTE in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and member of the Verizon West Chapter, has eschewed a rocking chair in favor of roaming the world to lend a hand after natural disasters. Josie retired in 1993, ran a home renovation business for three years, then signed on with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 1996. She began with a flexible schedule working as a local hire in Harrisburg before joining the public affairs cadre in September of that year.
ShirleyHilz
Our Life Member Spotlight is on... Shirley Hiltz of the Maryland Chapter. Shirley Hiltz is currently the Assistant Life Member Rep and the Chapter Administrator. Since the chapter lost its Pioneer Administrator in the '90s, Shirley has taken up the slack as a volunteer. The office is open three days a week from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The staff of volunteers that she supervises is responsible for receiving incoming mail, fielding telephone calls, retrieving and responding to calls received when the office is not staffed, and assisting with the Book 'em, Students Under Construction and Vial of Life projects. They put together packets for those attending the annual meeting in Ocean City, including making name tags for each attendee. They send out flyers for our many events, including our upcoming Life Member Holiday party for which they will again be making nearly 200 name tags. One of the larger projects they work on is sending out more than 15,000 tickets for our various fundraisers, one of which is Hersheypark Day. In addition to the Pioneer Office detail, Shirley is an active member of the TelecomPioneers, and along with her husband, Don, also a life member, participates in many projects that take place outside the office.
CITE
The Washington DC Metro Chapter of the Verizon Consortium of Information and Telecommunications Executives (CITE) recognized the Montgomery Council of the AGB Chapter for its partnership on several projects and for allowing CITE to use its office for temporary storage. The certificate was presented to Sharon Shields, Montgomery Council’s liaison with CITE, by Gilbert Armstrong and Angela Simmons, Vice Chair and Chair of the Community Action Committee.
Parade
The L.H. Kinnard Chapter participated in the “Pennsylvania’s Treasures” parade, sponsored by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the state capitol building, on September 30, 2006.

The Kinnard Chapter decided to tie its educational Dictionary and Lingo projects with Verizon’s FiOS service with a float representing both. The design for the float was the idea of Pioneer and Verizon employee, Keith Smith, Section Manager for NDNC Performance Assurance & Administration/Managed Network Infrastructure. Over 400 volunteer hours of work was put into building the float!
Verizon Literacy Campus
The Verizon Literacy Campus (VLC) is pleased to announce the launch of several new VLC online courses. They are: Creating Community Linkages, Using the Newspaper in Adult Literacy and ESL Instructions, and Reducing Student Waiting Lists. In addition, the "Using Learner Stories for Language and Literacy Outcomes" resource is now available in the VLC Library in the English Language Learner section.
Scholarship
The filing period for the 2007 TelecomPioneers Scholarship Program opens Nov. 15, 2006 and runs through February 28, 2007. Applications and background information will be posted to the Association website on Oct. 16. The TelecomPioneers Scholarship Program is designed to help further the organization’s education focus and its efforts to build healthy communities through individual and family involvement in community service.
Screenprint
To ensure consistency, we updated all the Verizon TelecomPioneer chapter website addresses so they would contain the words "Verizon" and "Pioneers." Through August of 2007, you'll be able to log onto your chapter website using the former and the new domain names. Following are the domain names:
