In June, Mother Nature pounded Broome County, NY, with relentless downfalls. The evening of June 27, rivers, creeks, streams and lakes reached record high levels and the flooding was beyond anything the county had ever experienced. Thousands of people were evacuated into emergency shelters, roads were closed, the county was in a State of Emergency for several days. Countless homes and lives were destroyed.

During this time of crisis, Excelsior Chapter members rolled up their sleeves and partnered with the American Red Cross. Members donated items such as diapers, wipes, bottles, sippy cups, and personal hygiene products. The chapter purchased several fans to circulate the air in the shelters that did not have air conditioning. Members supplied a family of four with socks and sneakers, as they were rescued in the middle of the night barefoot.

On a weekly basis since the flood, the Excelsior Chapter has been dropping off loads of paper towels, glass cleaners, trash bags, brooms, mops, soaps and other necessities at the several locations in the area.

Eight Verizon TelecomPioneer chapter websites recently changed domain names to be consistent with the other chapters. All chapter web addresses now include the words "verizon," the chapter name, and "pioneers." An example is www.verizonwjdenverpioneers.org. The chapter names also all have .org as the suffix, which denotes a non-profit organization. For a list of chapter websites, visit the Verizon TelecomPioneers website.
Ben Pietrowiak, a current life member of the Verizon West Chapter's Walter G. Wright Council primarily located in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois, served as Secretary/Treasurer of the council from 1984 to 1990. During the beginning years, the council had few officers. However, Ben was determined to keep the organization going. Even without officers, he continued to handle the essential council paperwork responsibilities, including paying annual membership dues for 47 members statewide who retired before 1970 and did not have retirement benefits. He also ensured that members who qualified for life membership were recognized and awarded their certificates. In January 1988, Ben addressed a letter to 145 of the 205 regular and auxiliary members requesting assistance in retaining the Pioneers in the Bloomington/Normal area. By March, new officers and directors had been appointed and the Walter G. Wright Council was reactivated. One year after reactivation of the Pioneers, Ben named and started publishing the Pioneer “Voice,” which is still being published. Ben is also volunteers with the Alzheimer's Association and the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.
