Money
Congratulations to the five recipients of the $5,000 Verizon TelecomPioneers grants. Established in 2006, this grants program was created to provide five chapters with $5,000 each in seed money to enhance their most successful programs. Applicants received points ranging from 43-59 with 60 being a perfect score. All recipients had a technology component and plan to include the Verizon External/Public Affairs department in the projects. The recipients are: Denver Chapter – Daycare Center Literacy/Website Initiative, Deb Foley; West Virginia - Domestic Violence Centers Initiative, Geneva Templin; Kinnard - Student Literacy Initiative, Leni Herr; Keller - Adult Literacy Initiative, Mary McCarthy; and McCully Up - Senior Citizen Computer Literacy Initiative, Jeanine Shabazz.
Rug Map
Last September, Girl Scout Troop 776 member Alison Teevan volunteered to paint a U.S. map on the property of the New Day Art School in Southern Albany, New York. Unfortunately, space constraints hindered her volunteer efforts. The chapter helped her fulfill her wish by donating a rug map, an electronic map and 48 dictionaries to the school. The New Day Art School is a free, after-school, walk-in program that is supported by the Girl Scouts. Nancy and Al Rebar
Our Life Member Spotlight is on... Nancy and Al Rebar of the AGB Chapter. Nancy Rebar has been actively involved with the Pioneers since 1983 when she was a future Pioneer. She became a Pioneer in 1987 with 18 years of service with Bell Atlantic. Nancy has been the chairperson of many different committees at both council and chapter levels. She has organized a multitude of exciting events and projects over the years. A “can do” person, Nancy has served as the Northern Virginia Council President in 1988 working her way to Chapter President in 1991. Nancy is an ambassador for AGB, raising awareness through the “Pioneer Newsletter” and signing up new members. His first involvement with the Pioneers was when he volunteered to help at the annual Foster Children's Christmas Party held at Western Electric. Al introduced Nancy to Pioneering at the Annual Dinner Meeting in 1979. The chapter recognized Al for his commitment to Pioneers in 1998 when he received the “Life Member of the Year" award. Al retired from AT&T in 1991 with 30 years of service. Today, Nancy is AGB's Office Manager. She also serves as the Northern Virginia Council president.
John McCullouch
John M. McCullouch, recently retired President of BellSouth-Mississippi Operations, was elected Chairman of the Board for the TelecomPioneers. McCullouch’s two-year term as TelecomPioneers Chairman runs from January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2008. Pioneers also voted to extend the terms of Group Vice Presidents Crystal Adams (Qwest), Gloria Delgado (AT&T), and Bob Pohly (New Outlook). Adams, soon to complete her original two- year term, was extended by two years as provided for in the TelecomPioneers Bylaws. Delgado and Pohly were voted to extensions of one-year each after completing terms that began in 2002 and were extended in 2004. The terms of the three extended GVPs begins January 1, 2007. “It is an honor to serve this exceptional group of volunteers,” said McCullouch. “TelecomPioneers will continue to seek ways by which we can provide the best volunteer service possible. Our members are determined to make a difference in their communities.”
Paumanok Members
On Friday, November 17, Paumanok Chapter volunteers gathered at the Verizon Building in Babylon, New York, to pack boxes for the troops stationed overseas. They packed and mailed 54 boxes so the troops would receive them by the holidays. The boxes held various toilet articles, such as soap, combs, nail clippers, toothpaste, tooth brushes, foot powder, Chapsticks, eye drops, bug repellant, sunscreen and toilet tissue. Also included were playing cards, books, puzzles, games, outdoor sports equipment, snacks and homemade cookies, and assorted boxed treats. To finish the boxes, members packed holiday decorations, cards and letters from students.

Playground Map
Current and future students at St. Theresa School will be getting a course in geography outside the classroom - on the school's playground. The Bronx Council of the Nova Five Pioneers painted a map of the United States in the main schoolyard of the Pelham Bay parochial school. Part of Verizon's Education for Kids program, the map is geared to help students with their geography, as well as to promote national pride. The large and colorful map took nearly five hours to complete.
